THE FATHER OF THE HOUSE
Father of the House is an honorary title, reserved for the
MP with the longest unbroken service in the Commons.
An MP loses his seniority even if he is absent from the
House for only a short period of time. The only official
duty attached to the post is presiding over the election of
the Speaker - when tradition dictates that the 'Father'
should be one of the people who escorts the Speaker to the
Chair.
